The first few weeks of residency are a whirlwind. Our new interns are navigating everything from clinic workflow to learning how to give a proper sign-out. To help them hit the ground running, we’ve introduced a new virtual reality curriculum.
Their first session wasn’t just about playing with new tech; it was a chance to practice the fundamentals in a no-stakes environment. They conducted patient interviews and performed physical exams on a virtual patient, getting a feel for the rhythm and flow of a clinical encounter. Perhaps most valuable, they worked on the art of the sign-out, using the IPASS format to practice giving a clear, concise verbal handoff.
This curriculum is an innovative way to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world application. It’s an exciting step forward in how we prepare our residents for the challenges ahead.
