Andrew W Hwang, MD

Andrew W Hwang, M.D., is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Health Sciences at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine and the Program Director of the HCA Healthcare Riverside Community Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. He serves as an attending hospitalist on the resident teaching service, balancing clinical care with hands-on medical education.

Dr. Hwang received his undergraduate degree with honors from Swarthmore College, graduating with an honors major in biology, an honors minor in chemistry, and a minor in English literature. He earned his M.D. from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, and subsequently completed his residency training within the Internal Medicine program at Riverside Community Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident.

Prior to his appointment as Program Director, he served as the program’s Associate Program Director for four years. At the national level, Dr. Hwang collaborates with HCA National Graduate Medical Education workflows to develop shared curricula and institutional policies, and serves on the editorial board of the HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine. Regionally, he holds leadership positions within the Southern California chapter of the American College of Physicians and the Southwest chapter of the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Hwang is the recipient of the 2025 ACP Early Career Physician Award for Southern California. His professional and research interests focus on hospital medicine, the integration of generative technology into GME workflows, and the design of data-driven dashboards to optimize resident training and administrative infrastructure. Outside of the hospital, he is a casual runner who regularly participates in road races alongside current and former residents, including runDisney events at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
